Bulimia nervosa, characterized by binge-eating, self-induced vomiting, laxative abuse, or fasting, is a major health concern that affects 1 to 3 % of college-age women in the United States. A uniquely modern disorder, bulimia occurs in industrialized societies that have a surplus of food and a preoccupation with slimness. Since this syndrome was delineated in 1979, a considerable amount of research has accumulated, but few attempts have been made to translate this information into specific treatment protocols for practitioners. Bulimia Nervosa emphasizes an integrated approach and offers health-care professionals a practical guide to diagnosis, treatment, and management of the disorder.
